What We’ve Been Watching
Larissa: After reviewing The Rehearsal S2 E3 a couple of weeks ago, I decided to throw it on the TV again to get a laugh. Sometimes brilliance strikes in the least suspecting places. The Rehearsal is one of those places. What seems to start as a gag with Nathan Fielder trying to understand the mind of Sully Sullenberger became a nagging issue with communication in the cockpit of commercial airlines between the Pilot and the First Officer. Along the way, we see Fielder’s commitment to understanding these communication blockages turn to obsessive passion, leading him to ultimately pilot a Boeing 737 full of people himself.
Yup, Nathan Fielder, an abstract comedian, was the PILOT in FULL CONTROL of a 737 making a 2.5-hour round-trip flight. He spent the two years prior first learning to fly, then gaining the necessary certifications to become licensed to fly a 737, including spending countless hours poring over manuals and flying in a simulator. He then leased a 737, stuffed it full of actors given one line each (a drink order), all to test his theories of communication with his chosen First Officer for the flight.
I would be shocked if this season isn't going to be racking up some Emmys. Watch it now for some TV you’ll probably remember for the rest of your life.
Mason: I saw that X-Men: Evolution is on Disney+, so being a chronically nostalgic geek, I decided to start watching it. The censorship rules of the old Fox Kids programming block are so obvious in this 2000s-era show when you know what they are.
If you want us to do a deep dive into Fox Kids censorship, comment below!
What We’re Excited To See
Mason: Pulitzer Prize winner? ✅. Period drama? ✅. Cultural conflicts? ✅✅✅.
Larissa: Like Aurelie Chazal, I am getting super pumped for Season 2 of America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. The drama, the AC/DC, the militant schedules. It’s perfection.
What We’re Talking About
Mason: Where I live is known as a very temperate and wet place due to frequent rain, but the warm season is underway, which usually makes me miss the rain. As I reminisce about the water, I start to think about Mermista, a princess from She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Outside of the core team, she is easily one of my favourite characters. (And probably also every adult watching the show.) The great thing about Mermista, other than her ability to control water, is that she recognizes what she goes through as what they are: inconvenient challenges. She frequently remarks, “Ughhh,” as she finds herself obligated to do something for the stupid greater good. In 2025, Mermista is all the more relatable as I feel the same as her when it comes to the ongoing fight against stupid fascism. Ugghhhh…
If you want to help me make Larissa finally watch She-Ra and do her best Mermista impression, be sure to share, comment, like, and most importantly, subscribe, and when we reach 100 subscribers, we’ll cover She-Ra and the Princesses of Power in a Prime Time newsletter!
Larissa: For the Honour of Grayskull, get us to 100 subscribers!
Editorial Note
We missed a show last week
Sorry… mistakes happen sometimes.
Sometimes updates to release schedules occur late in the week, and we don’t find out about them, or they are announced during the week after we’ve published. When we catch them, we will update you about them.
Cocaine Air: Smugglers at 30,000 Ft/ Y a -t-il un dealer dans l'avion (🇫🇷) (Netflix)
A French limited true crime docuseries that explores a curious case where a group of unlikely collaborators were caught in a cocaine production and smuggling operation. This show will explore the case and how they came to work together. It is out now on Netflix.
New To Streaming
June 16th to June 22nd
Kaulitz & Kaulitz (🇩🇪) (Netflix)
If you know who Bill and Tom Kaulitz are, you might be really into German alt-rock and synth-pop. For those who haven’t had these names seared into their memory through rabid fandom, they are half of the band Tokio Hotel. These brothers and bandmates offer a glimpse into their lives in Los Angeles and Germany in this German-produced docuseries. Season 2 begins this week on Netflix.
I Kissed a Boy (🇬🇧) (Hulu)
Already released to British screens via BBC Three, this reality dating series has lucky singles meet each other… with a kiss. Hosted by Australian queer icon and 90s hitmaker Danni Minogue this show is a first for the UK, despite being a place where reality TV dating shows are ubiquitous. Maybe you can pick out the new, unique twist of this show when it debuts on Hulu this week?
Chopper Cops (Paramount+)
A reality TV series that no doubt doubles as copaganda, too. This show follows the Marion County Sheriff’s Department’s “elite” helicopter unit as they use their helicopter to catch suspects. Please keep in mind that it’s not ideal to land a whole helicopter in most urban and suburban areas, so the two things Chopper Cops can do are follow suspects and shoot at them. The police having the ability to kill citizens from the air is a tad bit dystopian. Will this show normalize the militarism of the police? Find out during Season 2 on Paramount+.
Hell Motel (🇨🇦) (Shudder)
Hosted and distributed by American specialty streaming service Shudder and produced in partnership with the Bell Fund (formerly the Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund), a grant program by Bell Canada to help in the creation of interactive digital content associated with programs owned by Bell Canada, this horror show starring Canadian icon Eric McCormack is about a group of true crime obsessed guests at a motel that was the setting of satanic murders, who were invited there after renovations before history starts to repeat itself. Find it on Shudder this week to see if anyone survives.
Somebody Feed Phil (Netflix)
Phil Rosenthal is the creator of the much-loved sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. Which is the kind of career move that might make any network executive drool over whatever passion project someone wants to make. Like Somebody Feed Phil, a food and travel docuseries, where Phil, mentioned above, travels around experiencing new foods and cultures, you can see the new places Phil gets to eat this week when Season 8 drops on Netflix.
The Buccaneers (🇬🇧) (Apple TV+)
Based on the unfinished novel of the same name by “The Age of Innocence” writer Edith Newbold Wharton— unfinished because she died while writing it— this period drama set in the 1870s has American socialites decend upon London (the England one) to find husbands with titles and means, starting a British/ American culture war. You can see Season 1 right now before Season 2 begins on Apple TV+.
We Were Liars (Prime Video)
“We Were Liars” is a YA psychological horror novel published in 2014 that received much acclaim about a teenager who gets into an accident that affects her memory two years before her friends return to get her to remember what happened. The TV show that’s premiering is described pretty much exactly the same, except it’s pegged as a psychological thriller instead. Is it less scary than the book? Find out this week on Prime Video.
America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (Netflix)
One of the shocking reveals of America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders is that they are paid so low that they need to hold down more than one job. On average, after taxes, they’re earning only $59,995. This show, considered a spiritual successor to the CMT series Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team, follows the famed cheerleader squad from tryouts to the final game. The forthcoming second season will also include returning Dallas Cowboys cheerleading veterans as they do the same thing through the Cowboys’ 2024 season.
Yolanthe (🇳🇱) (Netflix)
Yolanthe Cabau is a Spanish-Dutch actress, model, TV personality and icon who is appearing in this new docuseries about her and her son living in Los Angeles after moving there from the Netherlands. Western audiences might know her from the movie Pain and Gain. However, you can see why the Dutch have been clamouring over her this week when this show debuts on Netflix.
Outrageous (🇬🇧) (BritBox)
This series, coming to us from the UK, is about the Mitford Sisters. They were members of a high-society family in England, known for numerous scandals. Most of them were fascists, fascist supporters, fascist sympathizers, or actual Nazis, and even were supporters of Oswald Mosley, the British Member of Parliment (MP) who’s big plan to end the war in Europe was to hand Hitler Europe and then kneel before him and begin to choke on the dictator’s nob passionately. Suffice it to say, Oswald Mosley was a P.O.S. One of the sisters, as far as we can find from limited research, was a socialist. But most of them were Nazis, fascists, and bigots. We don’t know how BritBox will handle this, or if the family’s politics will be left out. Just be aware of this fact as you watch it this week, that in the fight against Hitler and his genocide, most of these women were pro-Hitler.
The Waterfront (Netflix)
Starring American icon and former Supergirl actress Melissa Benoist, this brand-new crime family show is about a family with a North Carolina fishing empire that is crumbling. What legally dubious things is this family willing to do to keep their business and livelihood going? Find out this week when The Waterfront drops on Netflix.
Olympo (🇪🇸) (Netflix)
With a tag line like, “betrayal is a team sport,” it feels like there isn’t much else to say about this compelling mystery teen drama from Spain. Set at a school with a prestigious competitive swim program, the mystery kicks off when the best swimmer on the team (and the team captain) realizes that their best friend and others are inexplicably improving. Find it on Netflix this week.
Nelly & Ashanti: We Belong Together (Peacock)
Is it getting hot in here? Please keep your clothes on, though, because this reality TV miniseries is only about R&B artists Nelly and Ashanti, who have been married since 2023. The two singers originally dated from 2003 to 2013 and then reportedly rekindled their romance in 2023, shortly before having a child and getting married in late 2023. This series certainly poses a lot of questions. Will these two lovebirds be able to make it work for their new baby? Will Nelly be able to launder his image after two sexual assault accusations from 2017? There is one way to find out: tune into Peacock this week for this series.
The Great Indian Kapil Show (🇮🇳) (Netflix)
Indian comedian and icon, Kapil Sharma, might be one of the most hype comedians working in India right now. They’ve been nominated for eight awards, and they have won eight awards. They’ve had a seemingly meteoric rise in India, and now they’re bringing a new comedic talk show to Netflix this week. They also have a whole cast of friends and peers they like working with, too, so there’s going to be a lot offered.
The Gilded Age (HBO Max)
Set within New York City’s high society in the 1880s, this period drama follows two families, both alike in dignity. One is an old-money Dutch family, and the other is a new-money American family that earned its wealth through industrialization. Keep in mind that in the context of the 1880s, “old money” likely means they got their money through the slave trade. But we’re happy to be proven wrong when it lands on HBO Max this week following its debut on HBO— even if either network changes its name before then.
New To Cable
June 16th to June 22nd
Super Mega Cakes (Food Network)
One member of the Turn And Smile team has a prevalent existential fear that one day they will starve to death locked in a room surrounded by cakes because everything in that room will convincingly look like things that are not cakes, and all the cakes will rot before they realize it. You might think that fear is ridiculous, but already we can’t tell if the image below is a turtle with a cake on top of it, a fake turtle with a cake on top of it, or all cake. Join us in existential fear about these desserts when teams of bakers compete against each other to create hyper-realistic cakes this week on the Food Network.
Walking with Dinosaurs (PBS)
You might remember the original Walking with Dinosaurs miniseries from when everyone was talking about Y2K. This time around, this docuseries is not being billed as a miniseries, so maybe, if we’re lucky, we’ll get more than six episodes. This show, narrated by some British person recently cast in something that a wealthy bigot created and will continue to use to spread hate, and who hasn’t spoken out against this writer’s prejudice. Neither are worth mentioning and frankly seem pretty forgettable. This series, though, which can be enjoyed while muted, profiles a new dinosaur based on actual excavation work. You can find it on PBS.
Marvel’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends (Cartoon Network)
With Season 4 debuting this week, if your children haven’t gotten into this show, it might be time to introduce it to them. Much younger kids, around kindergarten or preschool age, will like this silly cartoon, especially if they’ve shown an interest in Marvel. Find it on Cartoon Network this week.
Expedition Unknown (Discovery)
Returning for Season 15, this show follows an archaeologist as they look for missing and unexplained artifacts from around the world. First up this season will be the Amerikabomber, a planned long distance Nazi bomber that took up two years of time time and resources to ultimately not produce a functional plane. The issue with the project was that it had to be able to cross the Atlantic from Germany to New York City (the intended target) without refuling or landing, bomb NYC to rubble (again, without landing or refuling), and then return safely (without landing or refuling). Which was, you know, impossible. See what the host discovers on the Discovery Channel this week.
Mystery at Blind Frog Ranch (Discovery)
There are two thoughts about Blind Frog Ranch in Utah (the American one). The first is that it is located physically close to Skinwalker Ranch, which “totally has unexplained supernatural things happening” on it, so there are “unexplained supernatural things happening” at Blind Frog Ranch, too. The other is that there is a treasure buried somewhere on the property. At any rate, there’s no harm in spending the Discovery Channel’s money, which you can watch this show do when the new season debuts this week.
The Gilded Age (HBO)
Get ready to see well-to-do women scoff and clutch their pearls because a new period drama is coming about class, wealth, and social influence. Tune into HBO this week to see all the hair-raising faux pas and manipulation between the Russels and Van Rijn families as they vie for the top spot in New York’s social scene.
WWE LFG (A&E)
Season 1 of this show concluded just last May. May 2025. Why are they doing this? It’s been less than a month. We just covered this!
Match Me Abroad (TLC)
Three American singles work with three international matchmakers to help them find their only love from a different country in this reality TV dating show set to debut this week on TLC.
I just finished season 1 of America's sweethearts. I'm soooo ready for season 2. The first season got me from completely outraged at how they treated those women to crying when some of the veterans hung up their outfit on the right rack. That second to last episode going from the Dolly Parton performance to the cheerleader getting assaulted was such a ride. I felt so bad for her. Anyway thanks for the mention and I AM SO PUMPED!
